Poppy is naïve and currently unfamiliar with the reality of the "Real World." As such, she views most engagements as a game making her an easy target in fights.
This plays into her fighting style, using genjutsu to make distractions or creatures only found in myth and often times can be found far from the source of the main conflict, amused by the sheer power she has in her genjutsu.
This plays into her views of the way of ninja as a "Game." something she feels she only really has to do for the sake of her clan's pride and not something she would do for herself. as such, she cares very little about the cost of life, nor the value it has to others, viewing weaker opponents as unskilled players in her "Game."

Side Note: Poppy is afraid of Death.

It's why she uses her Genjutsu to manipulate her opponents whenever sparring or in combat, as she doesn't want to ever risk the chance of dying. The Fear of death is what has driven her in her studies to learn genjutsu and mask herself in a world that she controls. But she isn't without pride or Vanity and would rather choose to dehumanize her opponents by comparing them to pawns or players in a game, anything to remove their humanity in her eyes to make her the Victor of whatever sparing or training she is in.

This dismissal of Humanity plays into her Naivety and bars her for taking a life, as she doesn't see any reason to continue after an opponent has been beaten.
